Clematis clearwing borer moth (Alcathoe caudata), female, #2623

Larose Forest

This is a large (wingspan of about 30 mm) day-flying moth that looks very un-moth-like. It bores into the abundant wild clematis that lines the trails in Larose Forest (and elsewhere). It is quite a colourful insect as it has, in addition to the yellow antennae, red, blue and yellow legs. Later, I saw the male but sadly it flew off before I could get a shot. Too bad, because it has a long orange tail!!
