Fishfly(Chauliodes sp.)

Larose Forest

This large insect is not a fly, despite the common name. It belongs to the Corydalidae family (Dobsonflies and Fishlies), in the order Megaloptera. This is an aquatic insect, yet another one that often comes to lights when mothing at night. This individual would not stay still and this is the only photo that is even halfway OK.

This aquatic insect looks like it was meant to fly rather than swim, so unlike the boatman it is easier (for me!) to understand it coming to your moth screen. Is the adult aquatic, or perhaps only the larva? Those large wings look like they'd get wet and drag it down. Fascinating; thanks for the information.
