Predacious diving beetle (Dytiscus)

This is a giant aquatic beetle that sometimes comes to lights at night. It is about 38-40mm in length so quite a whopper. This is the male, as it has the suction cups on its front legs for grasping the female's shiny elytra during mating. This may be D. verticalis. The larvae, which are even bigger than the adult, eat mosquito larvae.

If they eat mosquitoes, they're welcome to visit me even if they are quite large. Great capture. V.

Cool find Christine. I remember being bitten by one of these when I was a kid. I have hated them ever since.
