Gall on Ninebark leaf (Physocarpus opulifolius)

Photographed in Rockcliffe Park. Last year, I photographed some galls on ninebark flowers, and John Plakidas from Bug Guide, said those ones (on the flowers) were made by a gall midge (Cecidomyiidae) in the Genus Contarinia, but the species is, apparently, as yet unknown. He also said: "These galls are so rare they are not in Gagne's red book, Gall midges of North America."

Life on the edge: of a leaf, and of current science.

I like the way it folds over the leaf edge. Remarkable find. V.
