Alderfly (Sialis sp.)

Found along the shore of the Ottawa River. This insect (about 12-14 mm) is aquatic in its larval stage, and the adult is usually found alongside waterbodies. Eggs are laid on the underside of leaves near water. There are many species but identification to species level requires microscopic examination. Despite the common name of Alderfly, they are not flies (Diptera), but in the family Megaloptera!
