Carpenter ant (Camponotus ), male

I photographed this large flying ant in Ottawa's west end. I had no idea what it was, but thought it was a wasp of some sort. However, once more, thanks to Bug Guide, I learned that this is a winged male carpenter ant. They lose their wings after the flight period is over. I thought I knew what carpenter ants looked like, but never having seen the males with wings, I was confused by this one. Ants are in the wasp family (Hymentoptera) so no wonder it looked like a wasp!
