Striped maple (Acer pensylvanicum)

A bigger shot of the leaves of this native species. This lovely delicate shrub/small tree grows in the understory of our eastern forest, and is very shade tolerant. It is not seen in large numbers, at least around here, and therefore, is always a pleasure to see. Superficially, the leaves look like those of mountain maple, another native species in this region.
