Though they appear fruit-like, these red protrusions are actually galls made by Schizomyia racemicola, a gall midge in the Cecidomyiidae family. They modify the florets of goldenrods, in this case, a rough goldenrod (Solidago rugosa), found in Larose Forest. The larvae, according to Bug Guide, drop from the galls and pupate in the soil.
