While out walking a trail yesterday, I came across a huge aggregation of these box elder bug nymphs. There was a large compost pile on the edge of a farm, a big stand of manitoba maples (also called box elders), and these guys! There were thousands of them, both adults and nymphs in various stages. It was quite a colourful sight. Walking across this cluster is a tiny brown bug. I have no idea what it is because it is so small it is difficult to see it well. I am thinking that the box elder bugs were clustered together and on the compost heap, for warmth as the morning was chilly.
