I think the calligraphic beetles are amongst the prettiest of all beetles. I posted a photo a week or so back of a Calligrapha pnirsa, and here is a more common one, often found on dogwoods, especially the red osier dogwood. Their patterns are quite intricate and it is easy to see how this group got the name of calligraphic beetles. What doesn't show up in this photo, unfortunately, is the burnished gold appearance as if dusted with gold dust.
