One of the things that I love to see on cold winter hikes, is something bright and vivid in the woods, like red berries. These are of Berberis, and to me the fruit looked almost translucent. Unfortunately, this shrub is an invasive species, more of a problem south of us, but probably will become an issue here before long. Meantime, I enjoy how it enlivens a winter day.
