The fruit of the glossy buckthorn, some ripe (black), some not yet ripe (red). This aggressive invasive shrub dominates natural areas around here, along with the common buckthorn (R. cathartica). It is spread in part by birds who eat this fruit and then disperse it widely. However, the fruit is not necessarily first choice of birds, but more a last resort when not a lot else is around to eat.
