Goldenrod leaf beetles (Trirhabda canadensis)

Here is a clearly pregnant female and much smaller male hanging on for dear life. The female was not impressed with this guy and kept trying to shake him off. Earlier in the summer, when the goldenrods are sending up their leaves, you may notice lots of small shiny black (sometimes appearing navy blue in sunlight) larvae, looking like little caterpillars, on the plants. They turn into these guys.

already impregnated, she must be thinking 'been there, done that'...he seems to be quivering with excitement though...startling clarity in this superb portrayal of ribald times the woods...V
