Black swallowtail larva (Papilio polyxenes) (Butterfly)

This caterpillar is in the process of pulling back its scent glands into the little area above its head. When disturbed they will shoot these out. As far as I know, most swallowtail species of caterpillars will do this.

A remarkable transformation from the early instars, not only in colour but in losing its spikes. This one is impressive, and you've a great photo of it.
