Round-headed apple borer, longhorn beetle (Saperda candida)

This beautiful big (approx. 21 mm) long-horned beetle was found in the Burnt Lands Provincial Park today. In fact, we saw two at two different locations. According to Bug Guide, "Larvae feed on the wood of apples (Malus) and related trees in the rose family, such as pear (Pyrus), hawthorn (Crataegus), mountain ash (Sorbus) and Saskatoon (Amelanchier). Also: Aronia, Cotoneaster, Cydonia, Prunus. Adults feed on leaves. These insects seek out trees which are already weakened due to some other stress."

I found a dead one once next to our dying Mountain Ash. They are pretty, but I don't trust them! :-) Nice capture. V

I am not sure I would want one of those in my garden. Nice shot though. V.
