Brown mantisflies (Climaciella brunnea)

Two photos of these odd-looking insects! One of my favourites because they are so unusual. They belong to the Neuroptera. The top shot shows it from behind, the bottom, from the side. They look like a cross between a wasp and a praying mantis. They are not all that large, perhaps less than an inch. While they can be found on many types of vegetation, they really seem to love common milkweeds and can be found by lifting up the leaves, or looking closely at the flowerheads.

Great shot Christine - I had one fly into my office the other day and we caught it and released it back outside. They are very interesting but sort of scary! V
