Common buckeye (Junonia coenia)

Rockcliffe Park

This species is rare in Ontario. Some years may find fewer than a dozen reported from the entire province, other years there may be 50 or so records. This is only the second I've seen in Ontario, the first was about 6 years ago in Lanark County. As you can see, this individual is very tattered and worn.

Ever since you mentioned seeing this I have been eagerly waiting for the photo. And WOW!! What a thrilling encounter, especially since the butterfly allowed for such a fine photo!
