Click beetle, probably Melanotus leonard

Old Gloucester Dump area

Just a few weeks ago there was a mass emergence of another species of click beetle, today I noticed dozens and dozens of these very small click beetles, which Blaine has kindly suggested are probably Melanotus leonard. I find this beetle to be very attractive.

this is probably Melanotus leonardi (although there is another bicolored Melanotus in the Northeast)

Pretty red-head. Whenever I see a click beetle I shall never forget how I once picked on up and got the nastiest pinch on my thumb as it snapped the two portions of its head and thorax. Ouch!!!

Fabulous clear macro Christine. He looks as if he is all dressed up in his tux just waiting for his date. .

Great macro! I release one of these outdoors about once a week from our bedroom ceiling! :-)
