Garden cross orb weaver (Araneus diadematus), male

Photographed at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden in late summer. This is a male of the species (females are much more commonly seen). You can tell it is a male because of the swollen palps, which look like little boxing gloves held in front of his face! He is also significantly smaller and more slender than the female.

Ok, so I'm not real fond of creepy crawly things, but do admit that becoming involved in photography has eased my discomfort. Now I'm inclinded to try and get close to make a photo. It's great therapy.
