Hackberry blister galls and Black-capped Chickadee

These galls are so numerous the leaf looks like it has a disease. Not so. These are blister galls, probably made by a type of Psyllid, or jumping plant lice. Birds such as chickadees will peck open the galls to extract the larvae inside. Here you can see the top side of the leaf, the underside and the chickadee feeding on the galls.

This triptych is a marvelous educational tool. I know it works for me and is lovely to see as well. BV

Very interesting, Christine. I never thought about birds taking advantage of the gall inhabitants but it makes sense. Great demonstration!
