This hole was in the middle of a trail, which seems a favourite place for chipmunks to make a den entrance. However, there is always more than one entrance/exit hole to the underground chambers of a chipmunk! In fact, these little guys make quite a cosy underground dwelling. There winter quarters are even more elaborate, with a "room" for sleeping, and another serving as a larder where they store their food for the winter. These small ground squirrels don't hibernate in the same way that groundhogs do, because they will periodically wake up and pay a visit to their larder to have a nosh! Then it is back to sleep for another long while.
