Naturally, fox and coyote tracks look just about like dog tracks when you view each paw print individually. But the big difference is in the pattern of tracks. The wild canids are very purposeful in their gait, they lope along, intent on the business of finding food, and their tracks are always in a straight line, one foot in front of the other. Domestic dogs, on the other hand, run here and there, with no particular purpose, and the pattern of their tracks is that there is no pattern! Fox prints are very small, while coyote prints vary, but are certainly bigger than the tiny fox tracks. Snow can distort size sometimes, especially when it begins to soften, as this enlarges the tracks.
