Erosion on the beach

Barrier islands do not stay put. From year to year sands shift and dunes migrate. Folly Beach lost a number of streets to these shifting sands in a time when inexpensive beach shacks were the only structures along the beach front. Prior to the 1950's most property owners accepted these losses and simply rebuilt elsewhere on the island. A few continued to pay property taxes on land that the sea had reclaimed. Following Folly's first beach renourishment in 1992-93 a number of areas, mostly on the north end of the island, began to accrete and eventually a number of these lots were once again dry and landward of the SC Coastal Counsel's "critical line". As such they became once again "buildable lots". The city of Folly Beach discouraged but could not block construction of new houses here and about 10 large houses were built near the old Coast Guard station. Once again the sands of our barrier island are moving away from this stretch of the beach driven by dramatic events like Nor'easters and tropical storms but also by the gentle erosion of tides over time.
