On Sunday, May 20th 2012, Albuquerque was in the central path of an annular solar eclipse (when the moon crosses in front of the sun without completely obscuring it). Emily & Eric flew in from Pennsylvania for the big event, and we biked out to watch it just before sunset. Highlights from our little viewing party: E&E's decorations on our solar filters, using our binoculars as solar projectors, shadows getting stranger and stranger, and the ring of fire. Matt got some cool shots by putting the solar filter in front of his camera.
On the trail to our designated observation site
Setting up our camp
Annie gets right to work on the picnicking
Matt gets to work on photography
Emily & Eric take a look
The eclipse has begun!
This is how NOT to look at the sun
Much better, Simon
It will take a full hour until the moon is directly in front of the sun
Checking out the view
Pretty cool sight (crescent is projecting onto Maria's collar)
As seen through the solar filter
Random unfiltered view
We notice our weird shadows
Very strange
Slowly but surely
Dana takes it in
Annie is still focused on the picnic
Kristina: "I saw the moon again."
The solar projector shows a reverse image (on Maria's shorts)
Eric's "bagel-chip projector" isn't as reliable
Smaller and smaller
Eric lost in thought
Shadows are getting funkier and funkier
This is one of the coolest things about the eclipse!
