Mutawintji National Park is two hours' drive north-east of Broken Hill. Entry into one section of the park is allowed only in groups with a guide - this is where the first group of these pictures was taken. Then there was the walk to the gorge which was probably better appreciated alone. Before white settlement, the area was a meeting place for aborigines for ceremonies and socialising rather than a centre of permanent population. But the permanent water in an otherwise arid area attracted the pastoralists, and the aboriginals were displaced.
