Newnes is a ghost town now, with just the ruins of the shale oil works, relics of a railway line,
and this building to show where a busy town used to be. The hotel is no longer licensed and it is
not where it used to be. It was on the other side of the road, on the edge of the river and was
threatening to fall into it when, in 1987, a group of enthusiastic volunteers cut it into sections,
carried it to its present site, and re-erected it in one frantic weekend. It is now a kiosk, open
