Donkey Mountain

Wolgan Valley, near Newnes, NSW view map

This is taken from the route of the railway which ran to Newnes. The line was taken up
in the 1930s but the formation makes a spectacular walking track, with views like this,
creek crossings, old cuttings full of ferns, and of course the glow-worm tunnel.
Beyond this point, the old coach road crosses the track and leads down across the river
to the present road to Newnes. Or you can continue the walk along the railway route
(I did once) but parts of it beyond this point involve scrambling where high embankments
have been washed away. And no, I don't know why it's called Donkey Mountain.
