I was working & unable to attend, but was able to see the service & hear the lone trumpet play from my desk, through the window & out onto the green where the memorial stands.
I was talking to my mother-in-law today who had just received some old army records of her father who served in WW1. He was shot through the cheeks at 19, they patched him up and sent him back to the trenches for another 2 years. He must have suffered great trauma.
He was always an introverted adult. Sue can only ever remember her grandfather sitting quietly in his chair never talking of his experiences.
Remember the dead today - yes of course - but those who survived suffered for decades afterwards in many cases.
This picture is a beautifully simple floral tribute to those young blokes who gave so much. Perhaps we should do less flag waving when we send them to war, and give more comfort and support to the traumatised souls who are lucky (??) enough to come back.
