He's big,( 30cm/1 foot ) but he's not mean. When he laughs it echoes through the bush like no other sound. He eats grubs & lizards & can spot them from a long way off.

Take a look at my Close Encounters Gallery...any idea what it is ? Take a guess & all will be revealed soon...

Ah, the one you mentioned to me (I apologize for it taking so long for me to get here)...this is nice and the bokeh really adds to the delightful tonal colors in this shot...

The "thump-thump" you hear is my heart.
What a gorgeous shot of a bird I'll probably never see. GMV

Awesome close-up! Glad to hear he's good-tempered; looks like he could take off a few fingers if it he took a mind to!

Great shot, as Cindy says it looks like a black and white kingfisher, it is the same family and it shows.

Karen Stuebing17-Sep-2005 10:49
Of course I've heard of these birds too and never knew what they were. It's such a cute little bugger. And this is a really nice detailed close up.
Sheila17-Sep-2005 05:45
Great shot of the Kookaburra Laine.
They aren't native to WA and there is a bit of a push to get rid of them as they eat our baby native birds.
Guest 17-Sep-2005 02:12
So that's what a Kookabura looks like. Thanks Laine!
Petesie's got me singing that song now. :)
petesie17-Sep-2005 02:10
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree.....don't I remember a song from my childhood about a kookaburra? Always was fascinated to know what a kookaburra was. Now I know. Really nice image, Laine.
Yvonne17-Sep-2005 01:47
Superb shot Laine! He's got his eye on something there...they make a
little chuckle when they spy food on the hoof, a quite sinister warning
to the poor prey. Not so good at daybreak to have a whole family
land in a tree and out-cackle each other, they are LOUD!
Jeffery Stahlman17-Sep-2005 01:06
very nice capture

Guest 16-Sep-2005 23:09
WOW that's a great capture Laine. Really beautiful!!!!!!!
Cindy Flood16-Sep-2005 23:02
I always wondered what a Kookaburra looked like. He looks like he could be a relative of our Kingfisher (13") though much smaller.

This is a great capture, laine.
John Finlayson16-Sep-2005 22:20
Nice One !
Ian Morehouse16-Sep-2005 22:20
Iaine,
forgot to mention they also eat snakes. They mate for life. When these guys move in or move back you know you have a healthy neighbourhood.
There 2 basic varieties, th eblue and this one. The blue doesn't have the same laugh as this variety. Where thisa one has slight blue touches the blue has big areas of distinct blue feathers.

Lovely photo.

I tried to get a pic of a robin earlier but couldn't get anywhere near as close as this, he flew off before i managed to get a pic anyway :-/
