St Martin in the Fields, Trafalgar Square

St Martin in the Fields

A continuous place of worship since the 5th century
There is a cafe in the vaulted crypt and regular concerts and lunchtime musical recitals.

Also mentioned in the old nursery rhyme

Oranges and lemons
Say the bells of St Clement's
You owe me five farthings
SAY THE BELLS OF ST MARTINS
When will you pay me?
Say the bells of Old Bailey
When I grow rich
Say the bells of Shoreditch
And when will that be?
Say the bells of Stepney
Oh I do not know
Say the great bells of Bow
Here comes a candle
To light you to bed
And here comes a chopper
To chop off your head

So much to see here. I like the contrast between sun and the foreground shade.

Records state that in the 13th century the church here (not this actual structure) was surrounded by fields, which is difficult to comprehend given the central location and that the river is not very far away.

Nice view on a beautiful day. I associate St Martin in the Fields with the orchestra.

A beautiful place ! I am surprised to learn that St-Martin in the Fields is on Trafalgar Square. I know the name from "Academy of St-Martin in the Fields", which was a famous Baroque Orchestra directed by Neville Marriner... I always thought that "In the Fields" means a place in the countryside, very peaceful to concentrate on the music ... :)
