The cave is home to a colony of glow worms (larvae of the insect Arachnocampa flava) and commercial operators lead night tours into the cave. The ‘light’ you see is produced within the glow-worm's body. It is the reaction of four chemicals that produces the cold light or bioluminescence—meaning ‘living light’. Glow-worms generate this bioluminescence to lure their prey.
Glowworms have long been one of the things I've always wanted to see during my different visits to New Zealand. Unfortunately, I never had the time for the side trip. I didn't realize that Australia was also the home of glowworms. What a cool image of the cave in daylight.
