A Favourite Book

Not so much a favourite but one I read over 50 years ago and never forgotten

For the Term of his Natural Life, published in 1874 and written by Marcus Clarke

At times relying on seemingly implausible coincidences, the story follows the fortunes of Rufus Dawes, a young man transported for a murder that he did not commit. The book clearly conveys the harsh and inhumane treatment meted out to the convicts, some of whom were transported for relatively minor crimes, and graphically describes the conditions the convicts experienced. The novel was based on research by the author as well as a visit to the penal settlement of Port Arthur, Tasmania.

A very strong image. Haven't heard of the book before.
Watch out for a play called 'The Belfast Girls' by Irish playwright Jaki McCarrick. It's about Irish women who went to Australia around the time of the famine. There's a number of productions in Australia at the moment.

An evocative and rather dramatic but apt image for this book Laine. I remember reading it quite long agao, and now recall the harsh experiences described in the story.

I agree with Chris, somethings are easy to remember and yet others are not. Lovely rustic image too, Laine.V

Well, not the author I expected...

Just been watching a travel programme featuring child labour in Bangladesh and oppression in Burma, so the world is still far from perfect :-(
