Old Stories

Old Stories in a new book & TV series.
I was lucky enough to visit Quarry Bank Mill in 2014 with pbase member Chris. See photos here
http://www.pbase.com/lainesphotos/quarry_bank_mill
The children of the mill, apprentices, lived in this house and worked long hours each day
in the cotton mill. Some as young as 10yrs of age.
Owners of the mill, Samual & Hannah Greg insisted the children be given an education and provided teachers and a doctor to see to their health. Their schooling came at night after long days of work.
Up to 100 children at a time were housed here.

Hard work for them. Hope they eventually found a good life. So many towns grew up around a mill or factory. At least the owners saw that education was important.

The Gregs were well ahead of other employers of the day, if you were employed in that mill at least you had a chance, better than 16 hours down a mine.
