Curious coincidence; this week I was writing a quiz for Italian learners based on the names of chemical elements. The Italian for tin is "stagno" but I could not connect it to ANYTHING in English as a mnemonic for the students. That is, until I came across this caption and the reference to stannary towns - a term which I had not heard of previously - so thank you for that one. Interestingly the term is so old that it was showing up as a misspelling in my browser's dictionary.

It's a little bittersweet viewing this gallery. I had thought that I might like to see the English countryside at some point, including places like this. But with already two, and more likely to be three years of travel opportunities lost now, I do wonder whether I'll ever get to see this place for myself with so many other options jostling for the day when we can move again. Whenever that may be...

A marvelous reminder of a long past era. Must have been a job moving the big stone slabs in place. V
