November 1, 2003, I visited Todos Santos Cuchumatan in the Western Highlands of Guatemalaq to
photograph the Dia de los Muertos celebrations. This is one of the more remote and traditionnal
communities in the Guatemalan highlands. The haj, or 260 ceremonial calendar from the time of the
ancient Maya is still in use here.

There are several days of drinking, mainly sugar cane rum, prior to the climax, the horse races on November 1.
There are no winners in the sprints, the object is to remain in the saddle after a morning of races.
