"The name “kiyomizu” actually means “pure water” which is derived from the clear waters of Otowa Waterfall beneath the temple. Drinking the water is believed to be both physically and metaphysically beneficial. The waterfall forks into three channels which visitors can drink from; each one bequeaths a particular gift – health, longevity, and wisdom. However, one must choose to drink from only two channels, as drinking from all three is regarded as greedy and would consequently cancel out all good luck."
