Teotihuacan Ruins, Mexico

The area, near Mexico City, was first settled about 100 B.C.E. The huge Pyramid of the Sun was built not long afterwards. By 300 A.D., the city of Teotihuacan dominated Mesoamerica. By 600 A.D., it was destroyed and abandoned; the causes are still a mystery.
