A good design aspect of the Vine Street Expressway, the major highway (Route 676) that passes through Center City, Philadelphia, is that it is below the local grade, which helps keep down noise and improve visuals. But the sunken highway design was challenged this week when Hurricane Ida swept by with torrential rain. The highway's pumping station, which normally clears the water, had an electrical failure. Sequential photos in this gallery show the flooding consequences, which tied up traffic through the city, and the amazing speed (within 24 hours) with which the City cleaned it up.

The "100 year events" happening near-annually should be evidence to climate change deniers, but who wants evidence? The current situation was predicted over 100 years ago by scientists ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_climate_change_science) ( https://www.history.com/topics/natural-disasters-and-environment/history-of-climate-change), with more dire predictions starting in the 1980's.

What can you do? Drive electric cars, conserve energy where you can, sign up for wind and solar energy on your electric bill, put in as many solar panels as you can (if your neighbors let you!), and divest from companies that don't take climate change seriously ( https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/02/opinion/corporate-taxes-biden-spending-bill.html?searchResultPosition=1). There are plenty of investments/mutual funds that do well by supporting renewable resources.
