Two visits to Tewhakarewarewatangaoteopetauaawahiao, a village of the Whakarewarewa Maori tribe, near Rotorua on the North Island of New Zealand. The village was open to visitors and the residents gave tours and dance shows about their culture. The sincerity, kindness, and intelligence of the people was striking. The beautiful buildings of the village were constructed on a thermal zone in a volcanic area. Parts of the land were releasing steam and there were hot ponds with boiling water, surrounded by colorful elements at the water's edge, as well as small pits with bubbling grey mud. The Maoris diverted the hot water springs in clever ways to cook food and bathe. For greetings of a certain kind and to scare adversaries in war, the men would stick out their tongues and open their eyes wide, creating a fearsome view.
