Hobbiton, New Zealand

Who could resist a tour of the Hobbiton movie set, in the North Island of New Zealand? A long walk in the Shire, past Frodo and Bilbo's hobbit-holes and more, ending at the Green Dragon pub, where a pint was included in the ticket cost! I read the Lord of the Rings trilogy for my first time in my mid-teens, and seeing the movies with my children was great. The tour guides provided interesting details about the set, such as trees that are completely artificial with leaves designed exactly as the LOR director Peter Jones wanted them to be. Apparently after painstaking construction, one of the large trees was disassembled and the leaves were re-painted with a slightly different shade of green, to the director's final satisfaction. Many views are glimpsed for a fraction of a second in the movies, but painstakingly constructed on the set. For example, they had someone change the laundry hanging on a line once a day, so the footpath to the line would look worn in for just the right amount.
