Cusco was an Incan City that was disassembled by the Spanish and, using stones from Incan Temples, rebuilt into European-style churches and housing. The Spanish didn't grasp the sophisticated Incan engineering that used interlocking stones to build walls and foundations, so that structures would remain stable during the earthquakes that plagued the region. The Spanish churches would crumble every so often, while the residual Incan structures persisted.
