Hi Kirk, I posted a comment on a Photoshop Unsharp Mask setting which I use ALL the time to help boost local contrast in images which appear flat,or which have problems with atmospheric haze. I posted the comment on the Machu Pichu ruins shot you posted in dPreview's FujiFilm SLR Talk. I hope you can try this trick and use it successfully on those pics where you have everything pretty close to where you want it,but need a BIT more contrast. it also works splendidly after doing a moderate Shadow/Highlight adjustment.
