Benfra, the truffle hunting dog, with her handler

She is a Lagotto Romagnolo dog from Italy.

The land that we were truffle hunting on belonged to one of the Meteora monasteries. The folks conducting the hunt were allowed to do so for free.

The truffles could be buried deep but the dogs can still smell them. Truffles can regenerate in a matter of days.

Wild animals like boars also dig truffles.

White truffles are much more expensive than black ones.

Fascinating to learn about this. I had heard that dogs were used for this, but had no idea what breed they were. Great photo. V
