There was a decent sized population of Jewish people at Veria until WWII. Most of the population was deported when the Nazis took over Greece. But many were also saved by the local population. These folks mostly moved to Israel. Since then, there are events held in Veria in remembrance of how the locals helped their Jewish brothers and sisters.
