Our city guide, Augusto, talks to us about the structure of the walls. The walls were built with different materials at different levels. The lower levels were more solid, and the upper levels were made of more flexible material that allowed the wall to survive the movement when there were earthquakes. Nevertheless, parts of wall are falling apart.
It was interesting to on the second floor of the monastery where the floors and the walls were tilting in somewhat random directions due the impacts of earthquakes. We were told that the building was quite stable in spite of this.
No photographs were allowed within the monastery.
