Machu Picchu through a break in the fog

The terraces to the right of the picture are part of the foundation that was the basis of the construction on the mountain. The terraces used different kinds of layered material in them, and a design, that allowed water to be carried away slowly and gradually, preventing erosion. These terraces have survived to this day, and are a monument to the ingenuity of Inca engineers. Without the terraces, the whole place would have collapsed a long time ago.
