Hiking the Grand Wash in Capitol Reef National Park

This wash runs within a canyon and between tall rock formations that you will see on both sides. The wash fills with water during flash floods, and the flow of the water is directed by the canyon walls. The direction of the wash keeps changing every few hundred yards. When you see a canyon wall in front of you, it only means that the trail has changed direction!

We have never hiked in a wash. There had been some rain the previous day, but not enough to cause the trail to be blocked. What an adventure!

This section is called The Narrows for obvious reasons. You do not want to be caught here during a flash flood.
