After the War between the States, Abraham Lincoln ordered that respected community leaders start schools in their areas. That is when Andrew Jackson White started by bargaining for the land in 1867. Todd Flat School was first constructed as a log cabin with hewed logs. The land was deeded to the Board of Education on August 27, 1868 by Andrew Jackson White and Elizabeth Foley White. After the school closed about 1935, students were transferred to Oxley Hollow School until Athens School was completed. Electricity was brought to the area in 1944 and was headed up by Lura White Elmore when she petitioned a form to the Electric Company from the Pisgah Road citizens. Her family lived on the George Alvis Farm property on the right before Todd Flat School. After the school closed it became know as "White's Chapel." Many church services were held there until the 1980's.
