Sounds like it should be a Corpse of Engineers.

Well done on all fronts, Karen.

This is a fantastic documentary. It is a wake-up call to all of us who ask, "What is happening to our weather and why does our water taste so bad?"

It is a real shame that the quest for developing alternative sources of energy is taking so long. The most progress is the hot air our politicians blow out and that is still controlled by big business.

Amazing the amount of coal being trained out. The second shot really shows the scarring
the beautiful country side has taken.

I know first hand about fearing for the safety of my property and self.

The ability to lift the whole top of a mountain. This is one area where technology has run rampant. I don't
think people know just what that means until they actually see it with their own eyes. But I think that West
Virginia is unique in this respect: its whole culture revolves around coal. Coal is West Virginia's history.
Coal is the primary income source. And many power plants in the United States use this coal to fire their
power plants.

We need to develop alternative sources of energy and help West Virginians change their culture but not
forget their past.

Too bad the "government" does not see beauty as we see it. Well said, Karen. As soon as I saw the words "Corps of Engineeers" I knew you need say no more. I have a new beautitude "Blessed are the Corps of Engineers for they shall inherit the earth, but only after they have scraped it clean of all its beauty."

It doesn't take much for me to decide what I would rather look at...give me your image over the one below anytime.

Well said, Karen. I remember well my first visit to your state and the contrast between the beauty of the untouched areas and the ugliness of the stripped mountains.
Guest 07-Oct-2005 11:53
Karen, very well said. But these days, all those social, environmental, and economic steps that were taken by our government over the past 70 years are being striped but the new "free market", "big business friendly" ways of our government. It all comes down to jobs. WV doesnt have many, it is a poor state and is at the bottom of almost every statistic. I am sure they want to keep some decent paying jobs even if in the long term it destroys the natural environment of your state. People are scared. Many formerly decent paying jobs that people good raise a family on without an education are being eliminated by technology or exported. I could go on but i wont. I think its sad and outrageous to rip up all those ancient mountains.
