A Different Kind of Livestock

West Virginia

I was driving on a one lane backroad when I saw this fellow strutting around. I stopped to take some photos. Couldn't get close. While I was there with my camera, everyone who drove by stopped and asked what it was. I told them I thought it was an ostrich. Is it?

That would stop anyone dead in their tracks! To see such an improbable bird in such a setting. But people farm emus now, so... V

Emu came to mind, but are they native to WV?? Really an interesting-looking bird.

What in the heck is he/she doing out there?

Wow...what an ODD bird! It looks like a cross between a no tailed peacock/wild turkey/osterch...very odd. cool find!

It is an emu, Karen. Funky looking too. Nice, crisp focus.

LOL at Ira! Before opening it up I thought of the Possum Man, too. I say we keep this guy's whereabouts to ourselves, ha1

I say we give possum man a call, sneak on over, and have ourselves a feast.

That is one well camouflaged critter! How did you manage to spot it?

Nice shot!

Emu; legs look too short to be an ostrich...hope the thing gets found.

My zoology is weak. Very nice shot.

Very interesting looking critter. You may have discovered the last of an extinct species of some variation of turkey;-)
Nice shot.

Perhaps an emu, and maybe a young one. Very interesting.

Meant to say go to google & do an image search for emus then ostrich to see the differances. ( trivia...an emu cannot step backward ) Oh & it's pronounced eem..you, not eem moo, as I've heard it said by Americans :>)
Guest 03-May-2005 10:49
I don't know what it is but..was sure worth taking a pic..

At a guess I'd say you have an Emu there Karen. He is a native of Australia. An escapee from a farm perhaps !!
